Relation Between Density And Volume

Volume is the three-dimensional space enclosed by the closed surface. Density is mass per unit volume. The relation between density and volume is directly proportional. That is any change in volume will result in the change in its density and vise-versa.

Density and Volume Relation

The density and volume are proportional to each other and can be mathematically expressed as-

FormulaSI unit
Density to Volumeρ=MVkg/m3
Volume to DensityV=Mρm3

Where,

  • ρ is the density.
  • M is the mass.
  • V is volume.

Density and Volume are inversely proportional to each other. Mass and volume are not the same. Thus, from the above formula, we can say that, For a fixed mass,

  • When density increases, volume decreases.
  • When volume increases, density decreases.

Density And Volume

To understand the relation between density and volume, it is very crucial to understand each term individually.

Density
Density expressed the amount of mass an object holds within its volume. Or how closely things are packed within a described space. Density is high for solids, comparatively less for liquids, and lease for gases.

Example: The density of Iron > Density of water > Density of air molecules.

Volume

Volume is the space confined within a closed three-dimensional space. It can be a space that a substance holds or shape occupies.

Example: The volume of a solid cube: V= length×height×breadth.
